Response from Sen. Crapo regarding the RTP grant program

Here's the response I received from Senator Crapo's office regarding the possible termination of the Recreational Trail Program:

Thank you for contacting me to express your support for the Recreational Trails Program (RTP).  I appreciate hearing from you and welcome the opportunity to respond.

I share your interest in the RTP program, which helps states develop and maintain recreational trails for motorized and non-motorized trail uses.  Common trail usage includes hiking, running, bicycling, equestrian use, snowmobiling, four-wheel driving, all-terrain riding, and other off-road vehicle use.  The program has proven popular in many communities to enhance public access and use of public lands.

Congress is currently engaged in a long-term review of federal surface transportation programs with an eye toward reconciling growing infrastructure needs, declining vehicle fuel tax revenues, and meeting community needs for non-traditional projects.  Among those challenges is the proper prioritization of the RTP and ensuring funds remain available to authorized projects.

As an avid recreationalist, I have long advocated for the availability of robust funding for RTP projects. Although our states and communities have many pressing surface transportation needs, appropriate consideration should be given by Congress to worthy projects supported by the RTP throughout the country.

Again, thank you for contacting me. Please feel free to contact me in the future on this or other matters of interest to you. Yes, a canned and ambiguous response, but at least it's a response.  Let's hope he votes to preserve the RTP program!!
